SWAN 38 A boat with outstanding classic design, top-class quality and enormous respect for its performance and stability.
What makes the Swan 38 better than any other yacht of its size is its ability to sail on the high seas in all weather conditions, with fast sailing characteristics close to the wind, while keeping the crew comfortable, safe and rested.
The design was commissioned from legendary architects Sparkman & Stephens by the still famous Finnish shipyard NAUTOR in 1974. Nautor had already enjoyed great commercial success with a range of S&S designed Swans from 36 to 65 feet. The Swan 38 was designed as a more compact version of their outstandingly successful Swan 42 design from 1967, which had proven to be a great performance boat at all levels of racing. It ends up in a “head-turning” design with the flush deck-like design and the unique embedded spinnaker booms on both sides of the deck.
The 38 is built in truly top quality. Its backbone is a massive stainless steel beam that is solidly molded into the bottom of the hull. This rigid base carries the load of the mast and the 3500 kg keel, giving the GRP hull tremendous strength and rigidity. Most of the boats were built with a teak deck laid beautifully on top of the GRP top rail. The teak in this one (Albert) is original but in good condition.
In total, 116 copies of the 38-footer were built between 1974 and 1979. This 1976 boat has serial number 75.

With 8 berths, you have room for the whole family or crew. Below deck there is a galley, toilet, the possibility of 4 berths in the saloon, a cabin in the bow and an aft cabin with two longitudinal berths. In 2013 the boat was fitted with a new Bukh DV2 engine and in 2023 the hull was painted with Awlgrip.
Below deck, the joinery is perfect and polished to a cabinetmaker’s finish and still in good condition. The Swan 38 was considered a spacious yacht in its day, and while it now doesn’t compare to modern yachts of the same length, the deep hull sections and relatively large displacement provide plenty of volume, so storage space is generous and useful.
There are good pilot berths behind the settees, so off-duty crew can sleep safely in bad weather - manhole covers for these, of course. The forward-facing chart table to port allows the navigator to work in a large, flat area with bulkhead space for instruments, under-table storage for charts and paperwork and a useful shelf for pilot books or other items, without disturbing the resting crew. The reasonably sized galley/kitchen is on the opposite side of the stairs leading down from the cockpit. There is also a large storage cabinet behind the navigator.

Further aft, there is a private aft cabin under the cockpit. Accessed via a short (slightly low) passageway on the port side, it has a double berth and a single berth on the port side and storage space in the middle.
In front of the mast there is a toilet/shower to port, a wardrobe and drawer space to starboard. Further forward, the forward cabin is dominated by storage space for extra sails (such as CODE-0 and the three gennakers, extra genoa and dinghy). It can be used as a double cabin, with two single berths or a large triangular bed.
The cockpit is designed for easy sailing and handling while being well protected with the larger model of the original sprayhood, custom-made in the UK.
The Swan 38 is an easy-to-sail boat known for her excellent performance. Her wide decks allow quick and safe maneuvering space for the crew for sail handling and harbor maneuvers, and the simple rig with a single spreader allows her to be sailed shorthanded.
Before the current owners, she had two owners. The first owner bought her from Sweden and placed her in Lake Geneva in Switzerland (Freshwater), keeping her sheltered or indoors during winter time.) She was then only day sailed. The second owner had her transported to the UK, where she was also used almost exclusively for day sailing and mainly club racing (with constantly improving sail wardrobe), and only in summer. She is now owned by two German gentlemen who also protect the yacht on land every winter and have interior improvements carried out at specialized shipyards. They have successfully completed the following: new electrical system in 2019, new windows in 2021, completely new underwater protection in 2023, new - original - AWLGRIP paint on the hull in 2023.
Current owners bought her after a long search in 2018 in the UK and sailed her in the Baltics and later down to Portugal and the Algarve coast, where she is now. They love sailing her but no longer have time to sail due to work in Germany and are therefore ready to let her go to new owners.
The biggest added plus of this boat is - the beautiful hull paint in 2023, the new engine and full sail wardrobe. Painted hull keeps her always looking nice and shiny, without the need for major polishing and waxing.
The standing rigging was renewed (wires) in 2013 and inspected in 2017.
The yacht is currently moored in Marina de Lagos in Lagos, Portugal, but is scheduled to come ashore in Portimao, Portugal, during the spring of this year (2024).
